There's a bloke sitting in his ute, warm and dry, watching us struggle to put our wetsuits on in the rain, he shakes his head and then laughs, probably at us, rather than with us. Wearing two swimming caps (I considered the possibility of two wetsuits but struggle to squeeze into one), I tuck my hands firmly under my armpits as we stumble in to the water over the sharper than usual rocks. One of us says "it could be worse", the four of us are laughing. How could it be worse? "At least that wind isn't a head wind"..... true.... we paddle off.
The ocean water is pushing us up the river and then smack, we hit the icy river water like a brick wall. It shocks me so suddenly that I stand up, it's taken my breath away. For a moment I think I can't do it, I can't put my face back in, but somehow I gradually do and keep on swimming. Further up the river it's still as cold but my body has adjusted and I’ve settled into my stroke. Jogging back down the beach we're rewarded with a rainbow that not only crosses the sky but reflects up off the wet sand. The ocean water feels like warm bath water on my hands, we bob up and down and chat away while it carries us smiling all the way back to the boat ramp. Yep, it could be worse. If you’ve ever been belted in life with something unexpected, it takes time, but you adjust and not always, but often, it could be worse.
