I cradle my warm bowl of porridge in my hands, as I take a spoonful I can feel the warmth slide down into my stomach. It’s six degrees and windy outside and I ask myself “am I really going to swim today?” Stepping into the river water the cold immediately sears up my legs and my hands turn more purple than the cuffs of my wetsuit. It’s dim and I wish I had my clear goggles instead of my tinted ones because the water is dark and inky.
In the sky I see a row of clouds fittingly shaped like breaking waves, in the water I watch perfect circles of sand puff up caused by a friend’s downward kick. And then it happens, a smile spreads across my face and today it turns into an uncontrollable and unexplainable happy laugh, I have to lift my head up so that I don’t snort the water in, it makes my belly jiggle and warms me from the inside just like my porridge did. I know my friends and family think it’s strange that I’m swimming in the winter time, but for me it would be silly not to.
