I keep switching from backstroke to freestyle not wanting to miss anything. I have to choose between looking at the birds and the whispy clouds in the sky or the shells and the fish in the water. I start thinking about how amazing it will be to walk along the beach in the sun today and I start looking forward to that. I can’t decide what to look at and in my indecision, I’m not appreciating the moment of the right here and right now and possibly missing everything. There are seagulls everywhere enjoying the day, a lone pelican watching on, and more kayakers than usual. A fluorescent yellow piece of seaweed catches my eye and I watch the reeds sway under water. After our swim it turns out that it is an amazing walk along the beach and I notice different coloured leaves, bright yellows and greens, a dark red and rusty coloured orange one all lay on the sand. I’m not sure how far each one has been blown to end up here. I can smell smoke, it’s the familiar smell of Australian Eucalypts burning at a distant hazard reduction before summer arrives.
We come across a lifeless sting ray that has been washed up onto the beach, the crows are circling and when we flip it over they swoop in for a feast. Life is short. Appreciate the all of the magnificent moments and even the ordinary ones so that when you have the moments that aren’t so terrific you’ve got some good ones stored up in your pocket.
