I clench my fists to try and make my purple fingers a bit warmer. The sand under my feet is cold, they warned me about this, the cold sand. The water brings relief as a wave rushes over my feet. It’s warmer in than out. A sea eagle majestically and effortlessly glides and circles overhead, I look up to watch it and as I do I can feel some rain drops on my cheeks. The river is full of warm ocean water, I swim gently today and the water holds me gently in return. I use the same breathing pattern for the whole swim, four strokes, breathe to the side, four strokes, breath to the front, repeat, repeat, repeat. A stingray glides underneath me, flapping it’s wings just as effortlessly as the sea eagle had above. I’m fortunate enough to have been able to watch both this morning. I start smiling under water, it’s not a little smile, it’s a big joyful grin, this happens to me quite often in the water. Smiling for no reason or maybe it’s smiling for every reason.
The clouds part for a minute and the sun rays beam down to the bottom of the river bed brightening up everything within my view. It was like a little “thanks for coming today”.
