The rain sprinkles on my windscreen but by the time I get to the river it’s sunny. The water temperature is cool but bearable and I tentatively wade over to the beach. The sand is rain beaten and still has the pattern on it from the night before. The sun is bright and I'm hot in my wetsuit so I run into the sea and duck under a wave. The ocean water is much warmer than the river, I'm comfortable. I choose to stay right where the waves are breaking. It's dark when I dive underneath them and a few times I get tumbled by their strength. After catching waves back and forth I clamber back onto the sand and jog the length of the beach and then back to the track across the spit. It's dim and shadowy on the track and the sticks are sharp under my feet. It's a very very low tide, where there is usually river water there is cold sand. The water at this end of the river is brown and it's too cold to put my face in, backstroke provides a wide expanse of blue sky. The only part of me that is cold are my ears, I soon forget about them as I can see the sun to my right and the half moon to my left which makes me ponder in awe of the way everything works. Somehow, beyond my understanding the earth rotates around the sun and the moon changes the water level that I am swimming in. I'm a tiny spec on a big planet in a gigantic universe. A hissing noise brings me back out of my deep thinking, I'm not sure what it is for awhile, as it gets louder I turn and see that it's a fishing boat, it passes by and the gentle wake bobs me up and down.
I backstroke all the way, the blue sky is nicer to look at than the brown water and it's still too cold for my face to be submerged, although as I move closer to where the ocean water and the river water mix, I can feel the difference as the temperature increases. I'm back at the ramp but it's too nice of a day to get out so I do another lap.
